It’s tough being a woman in South Sudan. A woman has little economic mobility, may be forced into marriage by the age of 14, and, should she become pregnant, she has a one in seven chance of dying due to pregnancy-related causes. As South Soudan edges towards war with Sudan, life for women will likely get more difficult. Joy Mukaire of the Christian Health Association of Sudan (CHAS), a Health Systems 20/20 collaborator, tells us how despite the setbacks she’s helping other women access quality health care.
