International Women's Day is March 8, 2008. To celebrate, Health Systems 20/20 is highlighting two projects in Yemen that showcase the efforts of women to improve health locally and nationally.
- From Evil Eye to Handwashing: Volunteers Improving Health in Yemeni Villages
In a country where 70% of women are illiterate and culturally bound to the home, health information is passed from older females to younger ones, and ideas such as the “evil eye” as the cause of most illnesses is generally accepted. Still, women are eager to learn how to improve the health of their families and communities.

With membership swelling to over 1,000 midwives from all 21 governorates in Yemen in 2007, The Yemeni Midwives Association (YMA), supported by USAID/Yemen through the Partners for Health Reformplus and Health Systems 20/20 projects, has become a truly representative organization.
