Southern Sudan Health System Assessment
Health Systems Assessment Approach Manual in South Sudan
The manual was very helpful in Southern Sudan where a team conducted a health systems assessment for the government of Southern Sudan and the Ministry of Health as part of a project to develop a proposal to obtain funds from the GAVI Health Systems Strengthening (HSS) initiative.
The manual provided a structure for organizing the information and data collected, a checklist of data to be collected for each topical area, a framework for analyzing and interpreting the data, and comparative data available in spreadsheet format. The assessment assisted in identifying the key health system strengths, weaknesses, and barriers that impact maternal and child health services (particularly immunization services) and in prioritizing “gaps” in current health system strengthening efforts. The results of the assessment are intended to feed into the process of developing a strong GAVI HSS application to help Southern Sudan successfully transition away from relief efforts and towards sustainable systems to improve the health of children, women, and families.
