Revitalizing Community-Based Health Financing in Africa
Presentation given by Cheikh Mbengue at the Ronald Reagan Building October 26, 2009, as part of the Strengthening Health Systems Presentation Series.
Community-based health financing (CBHF) schemes, also known as mutual health organizations, and mutuelles in Francophone countries, expanded rapidly both in number and in numbers of people covered since the late 1990s in many regions of the developing world, and particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. However, the scale-up of CBHF schemes has recently stagnated in many African countries accompanied by a growing trend to remove user fees for health services and an increased interest in universal insurance. Africa Bureau and Health Systems 20/20 invite you to hear about a new strategy to expand CBHF coverage, make CBHF schemes more sustainable, and strengthen capacity at the national and intermediate level to strengthen CBHF in Africa.
