Health Systems strengthening is one of the top three components of the global STOP TB Strategy, which is supported by the United States, other governments, and development partners.

The U.S. Government Tuberculosis (TB) Strategy (published in March 2010), specifically states that the government: “will accelerate its efforts to strengthen health systems particularly by improving supply chain management systems; strengthening laboratory systems; increasing access to tuberculosis services through expansion of partnerships with private- and public-sector providers; and improving overall information management systems. Human resource planning and development will be accelerated as part of integrated efforts in health workforce development".

Health Systems 20/20, in its work on TB, has been providing technical assistance to help countries strengthen their health systems, in order to meet the challenges of delivering TB-related services. In particular, in Nigeria, the project has provided assistance to the federal and state tuberculosis programs in the areas of National TB Strategy development, TB supportive supervision, and integration of TB and HIV in leadership and management training.

Nigeria has the highest TB burden in Africa (311 per 100,000) and the fourth highest worldwide. The TB burden is compounded by the high HIV/AIDS prevalence – 27 percent in adult (15-49 years) TB patients – and by the emergence of multidrug-resistant TB (MDR TB). Inadequate or improper treatment of TB can turn into MDR TB, which is difficult and costly to treat. To ensure citizens have access to quality care, Nigeria needs strong management of TB programs.
