Suriname
To create an effective HIV/AIDS response, the government of Suriname is seeking accurate data to evaluate the cost of providing HIV services. Health Systems 20/20 is collaborating with the National AIDS Program of the Ministry of Health (MOH) in Suriname to complete a cost analysis of the National Operational Plan 2012, which outlines the program’s annual goals and strategies to achieve the goals. The results of the costing—a calculation of the resources needed to produce a health outcome or run a health service—will give health leaders in Suriname the evidence they need to ensure appropriate budgeting, prioritize activities, and advocate for increased resources. As part of the overall costing exercise, Health Systems 20/20 provided training for 16 MOH and National AIDS Program partners to teach them how to use and adapt the tool to their country context.
“We’re looking to provide partners with skills they can use beyond this year. Our goal is for the National AIDS Program to develop their own costing approach, which they could use to analyze the cost of future national programs and operational plans, including the next HIV/AIDS strategic plan,” said Subrata Routh, senior associate, Health Systems 20/20.

More...What Does it Mean to Be a Woman and Mother in South Sudan?
May 10 2012It’s tough being a woman in South Sudan. A woman has little economic mobility, may be forced into marriage by the age of 14, and, should she become pregnant, she has a one in seven chance of dying due to pregnancy-related causes. As South Soudan edges towards war with Sudan, life for women will likely get more difficult. Joy Mukaire of the Christian Health Association of Sudan (CHAS), a Health Systems 20/20 collaborator, tells us how despite the setbacks she’s helping other women access quality health care.
