Book Bank Donation

To improve and support Liberia's capacity to train health workers, Health Systems 20/20 has facilitated the donation of over 20,000 books and other educational materials to health professional schools in Liberia via the International Book Bank.

It is estimated that the health workforce in Liberia consists of some 168 physicians, 273 physician assistants, 453 registered nurses, and more than 1,000 nurse aids and other health professionals. A number of training institutions have few or no teaching materials.

Recognizing the need to strengthen the human resource capacity of the country, the Liberian Ministry of Health and Social Welfare (MOHSW) is committed to assisting health training institutions prepare the workforce to deliver quality health services.

The donation of books and training materials to health training institutions will greatly enhance their capacity to produce a health workforce that can deliver quality health services to the people of Liberia.

The International Book Bank (IBB), based in Baltimore, Maryland, increases literacy and advances education by procuring and shipping books and other educational materials to developing countries. Since 1987, the IBB has shipped over 30,000,000 new books to the developing world. The children's books, textbooks, and other educational materials come from generous publishers throughout North America. The IBB works closely with partners such as Health Systems 20/20 to distribute these books to libraries in severely under-resourced countries. Learn more at www.internationalbookbank.org.

A committee from the MOHSW and the training schools is working on the distribution of the materials.
