Leadership Training for Tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS Managers

Within the context of increased demands on managers of tuberculosis (TB) and HIV/AIDS programs in Nigeria, there has been a growing interest from federal- and state-level health planners to strengthen both clinical and program management skills of staff working in these programs.

In response to these growing demands, Health Systems 20/20 partnered with the National Tuberculosis and Leprosy Training Centre – Zaria (NTBLTC) to conduct a five-day training in February 2009 on program management and leadership for 24 ministry of health participants from the federal and state-level in Nigeria.

Participants were exposed to a comprehensive program management curriculum focusing on program planning, communication, developing and monitoring budgets, program monitoring, data use for management, program reporting, staff supervision, performance reviews, and strengthening quality assurance. The program was conducted through a structured series of interactive sessions involving participants in group discussions, individual assignments, and role-play exercises.

NTBLTC will facilitate a follow-on training in June 2009 with the support of Health Systems 20/20 and ultimately, NTBLTC will facilitate future training.

Evaluation Quotations from Workshop Participants:

  • “I have attended several training workshops in recent times but this one is the best. It is well packaged in terms of content, well-facilitated in a very conducive environment. It has improved my knowledge skills in all aspects of management especially quality improvement initiatives and communication.”
  • “The training is a very important one which focused on all areas needed to improve programming and implementation with a view for overall improvement an increase in efficiency, effectiveness and production of results.”

Facilitating Country Ownership of TB Management Training in Nigeria

Mar 24 2011
Nigeria has the highest TB burden in Africa (311 per 100,000) and the fourth highest worldwide. The TB burden is compounded by the high HIV/AIDS prevalence – 27 percent in adult (15-49 years) TB patients – and by the emergence of multidrug-resistant TB (MDR TB). Inadequate or improper treatment of TB can turn into MDR TB, which is difficult and costly to treat. To ensure citizens have access to quality care, Nigeria needs strong management of TB programs.
