Strengthening the Reproductive Health Sector
Health Systems 20/20 is supporting the MoPHP reproductive health (RH) and population sector develop the capacity to generate and use high-quality data related to RH and family planning. A Reproductive Health Management Information System (RHMIS), that is initially semi-electronic, with the potential to be developed into a fully electronic system as resources allow, is being piloted in Amran Governorate. The system will ultimately replace the current paper-based registry system. The RHMIS software and data collection, storage, and analytical tools should advance Yemen’s reproductive health sector strategy to streamline RH data collection at the point of service, improve the accuracy of the data, enhance decision-making capacity with better information, and expand the use of information at more localized levels.
The various data forms related to maternal and newborn care and family planning have been redesigned. These include:
- A concise and integrated family planning and maternal health care daily registry to replace four long registry forms currently used in facilities
- A related monthly report that aggregates information at the facility level
- Performance monitoring charts that allow facilities to track actual coverage rates for various services against already established targets
- An antenatal card that records important information on the patient that will significantly improve maternal health service delivery at facilities
- User manuals on how to complete the forms
As the project closed in September 2010, 394 health care providers were trained in 214 active public health facilities in Amran Governorate on the use of the new RHMIS forms. Officials are using the RHMIS data to generate monthly health reports and periodical RH monitoring reports in order to better understand health care issues in the districts and at the governorate level.
